A story from when I was 8 years old.

In 2005, I remember I had gone to play at the playground in my school. I was playing with a friend who had three sores filled with puss on her left leg. I saw with my very two eyes, that a fly had landed on her sore and after that moved and landed on my left leg as well. In exactly three days, I saw three sores on my leg filled with puss and I wondered how this could possibly be happening. As a child, I was wondering what was happening to me. The sores burst after I used a topical treatment and I thought that would be end of it, but to my surprise, in a few weeks my toes were almost coming off. My mother thought it was foot rot. The doctors thought so too. It was so weird to them. They were not familiar with what they were seeing.

Doctors prescribed all the medications possible to treat foot rot, but this thing just wouldn’t budge. More sores would develop now under my foot, it was such a pain to walk. The flesh beneath my toes had been eaten into so deep to the bone. I remember every day my mother would take off my shoes and socks after school and she would cry. She was very frustrated and wondered if there would ever be a solution to this weirdness.

The doctors recommended I stop wearing shoes to school and only wear sandals with no socks at all till they got to the bottom of the issue. I remember as a child, my friends in school would laugh at me and ask me why I wasn’t wearing socks and tell me my left foot was nasty. Some friends didn’t even want to play with me.

By the grace of God, my toes managed to get restored, but the sores and puss wouldn’t stop. They had to open the sores up to treat them directly so they would burn out. I would go through excruciating pain, and I dreaded every day I knew I had to go through this ordeal.

This situation lasted almost a year. As a child, I was so broken-hearted, and I would ask my mum questions. She had no answers to my questions but was doing everything so I wouldn’t lose my left foot.

My mum’s brother who was at the time a public health officer came to visit and my mother showed him my foot. He immediately diagnosed me with a disease called Yaws. He said that this disease is highly infectious and so far away from areas that are developed and that it usually occurs in the villages. What was Yaws doing in Accra? He said that if I didn’t receive the right treatment for the organism, I would lose my whole leg eventually because the organism can eat into the bone, reason why I was almost about to lose some toes earlier.

His wife is a nurse and I remember we would drive from Accra to Aburi several times for me to get shots from her for this disease until I was completely healed. The whole of my life in class 3 I never wore shoes with socks to school, just my sandals.

Today, I look at my left foot and remember. My foot and leg have been restored. Finally, in class 4 I could put my feet in socks and a full shoe.

In case you are wondering what disease this is, you can look it up and see. This is how God saved me. IF GOD BE FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US ?
